Water Based (Acrylic) Paint

We are all playing our part in reducing our environmental impact and this can only be a good thing. Things have changed a lot since we first started in 1995 and this includes our painting and finishing process. We now only use acrylic paint on all of our wardrobes. The transition from the old oil based paints, that were once an industry standard, was a gradual process. We needed to be sure that acrylic paint was up to our standards. We are now more than confident that the water based paints we use today are not only as good as the oil based paints we once used, but actually far better. We have outlined why that is on this page.

No odour or fumes

As we are always working in bedrooms, a zero odour paint makes for a pleasant experience and means that you can sleep in you bedroom unaffected by paint smells which are associated with oil based paints.

Faster drying times

This means that your wardrobe will usable the day after completion. It will actually dry (cure) a lot faster but we always recommend waiting to allow the paint to harden overnight before using your new wardrobe.

Less susceptible to cracking

Timber is a natural product, it can and will contract and expand slightly with heat temperature changes. Water based paints are far less susceptible to cracking than oil based paints.

Exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) Rays

Acrylic paints are far more resistant to exposure to UV Rays. This greatly reduces cracking or yellowing when exposed to prolonged sunlight.

Eco Friendly

Water based paints are a far greater eco friendly and non toxic option. The application and drying process requires no toxic chemicals.

Durability

There was a time when durability was an issue for acrylic paints. Modern, good quality acrylic paint has improved leaps and bounds and is now very durable and a great alternative to traditional, oil based paint.

To conclude, oil based paint appears to still have its place outside of our industry. Our research shows that it is often favoured for exterior work and for its faster (less coats required) application by some tradespeople. Neither of these benefits apply to what we do or the time and care we take in our finishing work.

I hope you have found this information useful and it gives you more of an insight into our approach and how we work.
